Following this post I'm going to propose to blog at the end of every week as a sort of diary of where I'm up to throughout my FMP. My initial statement of intent from last term was;
An editorial investigation into type and layout with a focus on bespoke typography.
At the time I thought that it was enough to explain my design practice and my personal values as a designer but I don't think that it is relevant any longer as I'm producing work that is more specific and conceptually based and so for my rewrite at the start of this term I wrote;
I'm still not fully pleased with what I have written but it's getting there, my practice is solely based on literature and a strong concept, I know that within Graphic Design there is generally a concept you have to address but I'm more concerned with every aspect of the product resolving my concept, from the form and layout to the type choices and vocabulary.
I pitched for the Graphic Design yearbook with Natalie Jackson and our idea and design centred around the publication 'Hunger' by Rankin that showcases all of the emerging talent within multiple disciplines. The main point that we wanted to get across was the theme of hunger, but within a sister concept of 'Thirsty?', that our course was thirsty and driven and we were going to succeed at our endeavours. We got chosen to design the Fine Art yearbook which I am ECSTATIC about because as a course they are heavily conceptual and I think that we could work together really well. As there were only two of us in the group we had to recruit more members as it is a massive undertaking and we can't expect to do it with only two people.
Our group consists of;
Gemma Byrne, Nick Morgan, Steph Ogelsby, Kirsty Hair, Natalie jackson and myself as project manager.
We are all very excited about working together and we've collected some of the previous years books so that we can look at how they usually work, we will have our first meeting tomorrow and then arrange a meeting with fine art next week. The good thing is that a few of the fine art students have stepped up to help us out with the project.
These were our initial boards for the pitch;

Conceptual Graphic Design for installation, publication and packaging focusing on photography, type and layout, and driven by Arts & Culture.

This week I also finished my website on cargo, here is the link!

Obviously it still has a long way to go and I need to sort out my own domain name but it's getting there! I have also designed my business cards and constructed them in the least efficient way possible, it's white card, with fluorescent paper stuck to the back, with stickers of my details on both sides... I didn't want to just print them but it is taking me a very long time to make them.... I do like them though! I'm going to take them along with me to catch up tonight with catalogue. Speaking of which, I have made a PDF of my work to send to them, i'm not expecting anything but it's worth a shot.
I will upload pictures of my business cards asap, most probably tomorrow, as I also need to photograph the packages I am sending to my favourite design agencies. To best utilise last modules work, I have put together little bundle of my work to send to round 15 different agencies, all packaged into SENSATION holographic/metallic/silky smooth goodness(envelopes).
Hopefully I will hear back from at least one of those people!
I had my feedback tutorial with Lorenzo today and it went really well, I know what I want to do and where I want to go, I just need to subject matter. I need to get a LOT better at photographing for documenting purposes, because i think i lose the value of my design when i present it, my photographs on my boards were shocking! I do however, like my photography work pertaining to objects and people. I just need to start generating more, more products, more ideas, and worry about the crafting later.
I have gone on a lot in this blog post but I needed to write a lot of what has been scrawled all over my notebook. To summarise this blog post;
* I am conceptual, my value as a designer is within the idea of a product
* I am project manager for my group and the Fine Art yearbook!
* I have made my website, business cards and I have targeted agencies with mail outs.
* I need to get better at my documenting photography and presentation
* I need to generate MORE conceptual ideas and mock ups
I am generally very happy with myself, and not in an arrogant way, just happy in the way that I am not going to go home and be unable to shut off from design, just happy that I don't for once think less of myself!
