update

I just need to get a few points down on my blog because I thought that I was on top of everything but I still have quite a bit to do so here's my to do list.

1. Finish off design development boards
I have decided to only produce these boards for my three main briefs as they are the ones that I have made the most progress on in terms of research and design. (Satanism, MIOF & Zine fest)

2. Tags for Satanism bag
I have basically finished this brief, it's just that I have an accompanying bag with the publications and so I just need to quickly design a tag and make it.

3. Matte envelope product shot
I don't actually have a full product shot of MIOF, and so I need to scan in everything together, or at least take a photograph of the passes with the envelope and the programme as I have made the decision for them to be packaged in this. I could also just scan these.

4. Passes for zine fest
Again just a quick dropping of artwork onto a rigid stock.

5. Waitress brief
I still need to take pictures of this brief in context, I feel like the product, although only for a small brief has come out really well so it would be silly to not submit.

6. PPD Submission
Create one folder for
- Business card artwork
- CV artwork
- Portfolio
- Stationary

7. Fine Art
I need to find my pitch for their yearbook before I left the group and then write up why I left for my project file. And put onto blog.

8. Find Graphic Design pitch
And put up on blog

9. Zine fest visuals
- blog visuals
- put visuals on disc
- make artwork for disc

SUBMISSION DISC CHECK LIST

AMY LEIGH OUGD303 FOLDER
- Submission boards
- Design development boards

lost

i've sent my DC book off but there was a bit of a cock up, i uploaded a low quality PDF, panicked, then had to reorder it so i am hoping that it gets printed in time for next weeks crit. I've been printing off labels and things at home but then my printer broke. I'm still waiting on bags for two of my projecta, essentially i think i'm just going to die.

crit today

I'm not sure how helpful the crit was today, i don't know what that was due to - it just wasn't. I prepared for it and I had a lot of my deliverables there alongside the briefs and questions. Anyway.

SATANISM

The brief was turned around so that it was aimed at, excuse the term 'hipsters' and so it's all about cliche fashionable collectibles, from the crit I was told to create;

a tote bag
posters
t shirts

i've bought all of this

THINKERS

Make exercise books
Print work sheets
buy a4 folders - card upstairs in library

MY IDEA OF FUN

I have decided that this brief needs a little more direction and so i'm going to have these still existing as editions but have them part of an exhibition - so using the relevant artists within the book, make an explanatory leaflet to go along side the 'purchase'

so the deliverables would be

6 books
6 plastic bags
12 posters

MENU

Photograph in context

KILLERS

make my own evidence bags out of manilla envelopes
documents enclosed fact file
poster

MISC ZINES

Buy cello bags
print stickers

I started this post at 12ish and I still haven't done!

OKAY SO UPDATED DELIVERABLES

SATANISM
4 BOOKS
4 POSTERS
1 TOTE
1 T SHIRT

MY IDEA OF FUN
6 BOOKS
6 POSTERS
6 BAGS
1 INFORMATIVE EXHIBITION PAMPHLETS

KILLERS
4 BOOKS
4 FACT FILES
4 MANILLA 'EVIDENCE' MANILLA ENVELOPES
4 GRIP SEAL DOCUMENTS ENCLOSED BAGS

MISC ZINES
15 ZINES
15 CELLO BAGS

THINKERS
4 BOOKS
4 WORKSHEETS
4 EXERCISE BOOKS
4 FOLDERS FROM LIBRARY

I think the reason it took me so long to write was because i was feeling unmotivated from the crit boohoo

end of year proposal

I'm just waiting on the proposal form coming live again because the links been lost but here are my ideas;

when I was working at vast, martyn and haider gave me a lot of ideas of how I could present my publications in a photographic sense that would be allowed. We looked at September industrys 'made thought' series and the way they photograph seems to fit the bill. If i were to arrange the best of them and take an aerial shot it would seem as if they were actually there.

placement at vast

Last week I was on a weeks placement at Vast in Leeds, it went really well because I was given a live project to do at the start of the week that I saw through to the end and even onto pitch boards. It was good experience in particular because it was so far from what I would usually be comfortable with, it was a web design brief for bridal wear using illustrator which I never generally use and so I learned a lot both in using the program and designing for a commercial client. Hopefully I will be able to revisit them in the future as it is definitely an environment I would be happy working in.

Weekly diary update

I haven't updated my weekly diary in a while so here we go!

I've just finished my design strategy presentation and written out what I want to say and i'm quite excited.

I have 12 out of 18 of my printed publications and I will be receiving the rest this week in time for up and coming tutorials and crits, 30 in total! But I plan on adding to that.

I've set up my domain name on cargo so it is a fully functioning website now which is cool.

And here is my to do list;

1. First of all I need to make a plan for the remaining weeks of the course, sob.
2. Once I have all of my publications I need to rephotograph them and put them onto my website, publications that need to be rephotographed include;

* Yeah! Science
* Killer!
* Freud & Adorno
* KU IBIZA
* Satanism
* Chloe
* My idea of fun
* Anatomy of disgust
* Girls
* Meat is theatre
* Sanguinary Creeps
* The pink room
* Heathers
* Splendora
* Misc zines

3. One photographed I need to make sure that all PDFs of publications are uploaded onto blogger.
4. I need to send a PDF and link to VICE for possible submission.
5. Re-write briefs (upload to blog and print for project file) and sort out blog labels to correspond with these.
6. Print out crit feedback/weekly diary blog posts to put in project file
7. Source cellophane bags
8. Make a list of extra deliverables for each brief (stickers, promo etc)
9. Re-design business card and stationary and print out
10. Ask about portfolio
11. Submit something for itsnicethat student of the month
12. Send a publication to Ben and Alasdair and a thank you note
13. Come up with questions for Marcroy, Ben, Alasdair and Rob
14. Continue putting information into DC publication

This is how i'm feeling.

I've sent off one of my edited publications to be printed and bound, so we'll see how that turns out.
I have re-done some of my posters, now I need to think about distribution.

Meat is Theatre

There are a lot of different designs for this brief, I've decided to go with black and yellow, and i've also sent one of these off to be printed and bound to check that out, but I need to make the other ones.
Also I have 38 wandering zines I need to fit into this project so I'm going to call them 'the yellow room' and they will be printed onto yellow paper in black... I need to edit them.

Crit

I'm feeling very positive about everything today. I just came out of a really good crit that gave me so much direction and now I'm really excited about my work again. One of the main problems with my design practice is that I am my own audience, I produce a lot of design aimed at myself; unfortunately I cannot be my own target market and I need to make myself more accessible. 90% of my FMP is publication, and I was thinking about how I wanted to start something up this year in the form of a collective... what better way than to have my own zine archive.

I have been thinking a lot about how I want to present myself at the end of year show and one of the primary reasons as to why I produced so many zines and gave myself 100 zines to make was simply for the fact that I wanted to have an entire archive for people to take away with them to remember me by. I decided to get rid of that idea as I think I was concentrating more on quantity than quality and some of the design I produced I wasn't happy with.

Here is a brief run down on the feedback I got from crit.

Satanism brief
Although I've been doing a lot of reading into Satanism and really enjoyed what I've found, I found myself unable to properly explain to my group what it meant, the basic principles etc. My group had the reaction that I'm trying to get rid of, so really I've failed so far! The design aspect is perfectly fine and I have come up with rules to stick by so there's nothing major I need to edit in that area, it's just the initial impression when you pick up the publication, all of my group said that they would refrain from picking up the publication on the basis that it said SATANISM is red type on the front, also apparently I have too many hearts, which I agree with. The effectiveness of the cover designs were better when it was abstract and it wasn't initially recognisable. There was also a suggestion that I should eliminate tell tale language like the actual word Satan? I do see merit in trying to make the reader make up their mind before they realise what it is about, but then I feel like I'm pandering. Initially I was going to represent perfectly logical statements typographically and then have the subtext as 'SATANISM' and I think that the group agreed that subtlety was definitely the better way to go. Also a bit of tongue and cheek?

Meat is Theatre
I didn't really go into too much detail about this project as I wasn't having as many problems with this one, the main problem is that I haven't structured the information as well as I could have and maybe this means that I need to do some more research before I carry on. I need to devise a chapter structure, and perhaps even make the publication a lot shorter than it actually is as the message is lost with the reams and reams of information. In terms of deliverables I think I am sticking with the idea of one larger publication to introduce the idea and the concept/info but then several separate ones with messages attached. So I'm okay on this brief I just need to choose a design direction and plan out several tag lines/messages to explore.

The Waitress
Design direction fine, really works just consider format and scale, I'm thinking of scaling them up and laminating them, or finding a menu holder to house them.

90's Magazine
Fine

Misc zines
Fine

Competition briefs
Self explanatory

Fine Art
Dropped and not going to continue, as I have a new idea for a project.

So the new idea for the replacement for my Fine Art Yearbook brief is to creative my own online independent publication collective, and as I am so married to the name of my 90's magazine, I'm going to steal it! Splendora - Human behaviour and language, and this has prompted me to revisit my umbrella statement;

Conceptual, research driven design for independent publication driven by human behaviour and language.

This means that I am not limiting myself, previously it was film, lit and music... and I had to keep explaining how the overarching theme was language, now I don't have to.

So with this new collective in mind, that will essentially be my umbrella statement, a catalogue of my research findings with messages attached, on different subjects, both my observations and in pop culture. This could even transfer onto exhibitions and zine festivals etc.

I have to take pictures of all of the mocks I made for today and also the notes I've made for idea generation but this is where I am at the moment. I AM VERY EXCITED.

TO DO LIST 29/2/12

I had my tutorial with Lorenzo today and it cleared up a lot of problems and worries I was having, i'm glad I chose to have both tutorials ASAP because I can spend all the time in the world planning for something that should already have been planned. Something major that came out of the tutorial was that my blog is really confusing and hard to follow, as usual. But I have just spent the last two hours going back through my posts and deleting and adding new labels and now my head feels less confused about what I'm supposed to be doing. The amount of briefs I have taken on is fine and I don't need to worry about adding any more, and i have also come up with separate categories for things that don't relate to those main briefs.

My to do list from today;

All Projects
* Rewrite briefs and blog them - remember the context and where they exist, my audience

Fine Art Yearbook
* Make cover template using chosen design + transfer onto leaflet then send to Kirsty
* Blog contact reports

DC Publication
* Research
* Revise chapter structure

Meat is Theatre
* Research
* Think about the structure of the book and how others will understand it
* Think about creating a strap line

Satanism
* Find Satanism publication on computer
* Mock up all booklets on my printer/1 printed in digital print/posters in digital print

Competition Briefs
* List all the briefs in one blog post + find more

Splendora
* Put Tom's games article in magazine

The Waitress
* Research into French menus from various decades
* Look at format and scale

Tutorial with Andy

Today I had a tutorial with Andy Lodge and it cleared up a lot of problems and concerns that I was having with my projects. The briefs that we talked about were;

* Satanism
I am happy with my concept for this brief and I know how to take it further, I had never thought about it before but Andy mentioned that if you can create just one poster that sums up your project entirely then it is a solid concept. I am going to produce a series of publications about satanism, detailing aspects of the religion and how it isn't necessarily as dark as people once thought. Andy suggested that I could possibly venture into marketing and try to envision how Satanism would be marketed to the public in a modern age as something that was usually kept hidden. I am a little worried about turning it into a campaign/marketing brief because I really have no experience and I know if I research I can come up with appropriate ideas and ways of going about it but I think i'm just concerned about going out of my comfort zone. He appreciated that a lot of my briefs centre around my own interests and that now is the time, if ever, to indulge myself in personal projects. After the email I got back from the Church of Satan in LA I was a little concerned with adding my own voice to the project as I wanted to keep it neutral, but now I am thinking I could go a little funnier, as the main statement that encouraged me to use Satanism as a starting point was about common misconceptions and was worded quite humorously. So now I am thinking of getting the books done as soon as possible and also a poster to go with each book. After I have those printed off and I can see them, then I can push them further and see how I can apply them to other media.

* 100
I think I confused him a little with this brief, I am confused myself, we spent the most time talking about this one. It definitely needs more structuring as I think it is a really important message and I want to make sure that everyone understands where i'm coming from. I need to construct a chapter structure, really do some more research and find out what I want to include. I think I really have to start writing something for this brief, I have the shortest introduction that doesn't really explain where i'm coming from, but I need it to. He gave me a lot of really good ideas for how to have the end product. He suggested that I could start off with the design/information really structured and then allow it to abstract itself, so that the reader understands from the beginning and then is left to their own devices. I have a lot of 'banged out' designs and layouts for this brief, and I am wondering if I should dismiss them all or not. A lot of the images lose impact because they are black and white. And the fact that I'm including imagery of a slaughterhouse suggests that I really need consider colour. I was thinking of printing the book in black and white but having colour inserts that can be bound into the design. I need to speak to the binding service at Leeds University to see what other services they offer as to variations on binding for my design. I need to research more for this and come up with a chapter structure, I know my design direction which makes me feel a lot better. I'm thinking of maybe experimenting with printing my meat pictures onto acetate and have them as inserts into the design. Where this could go abstract can then flood into music lyrics and quotations.

* Splendora
This brief is basically fine, I just need to add more content from Tom and myself and experiment with stocks as originally it was a magazine idea, but now it would be more suited as a zine.

* The Waitress
I need to google different ways menus are presented as I am happy with my simple designs, they just need to be presented in a way in which would relate to the brief and the design.

------

I feel generally less stressed, but I have started lots of smaller projects that need to be categorised and labelled as another brief, something that has been getting really good reactions has been my chloe sevigny zine... perhaps I should extend that? My Peep Show zine has also had a good reaction. Maybe one of my briefs should be miscellaneous zines and have ten different zines? And maybe then I would be less obsessed with trying to make everything into a zine. I was thinking about doing a series of funny celebrity zines?

* Peep Show
* Chloe
* Meat is Theatre abstract zines

In terms of a to do list;

* Email Andy
* Email Paul
* Sort out bookmarks & make labels for mail outs (Catalogue/OK RM/Teacake)
* Make more business card stickers for cards
* Email YCN application
* Sort out what to mail out
* Take home stuff already printed to take pictures
* Print things to send out + select envelopes

----

BUY
* stocks for zines to print at home
