Tutorial with Andy

Today I had a tutorial with Andy Lodge and it cleared up a lot of problems and concerns that I was having with my projects. The briefs that we talked about were;

* Satanism
I am happy with my concept for this brief and I know how to take it further, I had never thought about it before but Andy mentioned that if you can create just one poster that sums up your project entirely then it is a solid concept. I am going to produce a series of publications about satanism, detailing aspects of the religion and how it isn't necessarily as dark as people once thought. Andy suggested that I could possibly venture into marketing and try to envision how Satanism would be marketed to the public in a modern age as something that was usually kept hidden. I am a little worried about turning it into a campaign/marketing brief because I really have no experience and I know if I research I can come up with appropriate ideas and ways of going about it but I think i'm just concerned about going out of my comfort zone. He appreciated that a lot of my briefs centre around my own interests and that now is the time, if ever, to indulge myself in personal projects. After the email I got back from the Church of Satan in LA I was a little concerned with adding my own voice to the project as I wanted to keep it neutral, but now I am thinking I could go a little funnier, as the main statement that encouraged me to use Satanism as a starting point was about common misconceptions and was worded quite humorously. So now I am thinking of getting the books done as soon as possible and also a poster to go with each book. After I have those printed off and I can see them, then I can push them further and see how I can apply them to other media.

I think I confused him a little with this brief, I am confused myself, we spent the most time talking about this one. It definitely needs more structuring as I think it is a really important message and I want to make sure that everyone understands where i'm coming from. I need to construct a chapter structure, really do some more research and find out what I want to include. I think I really have to start writing something for this brief, I have the shortest introduction that doesn't really explain where i'm coming from, but I need it to. He gave me a lot of really good ideas for how to have the end product. He suggested that I could start off with the design/information really structured and then allow it to abstract itself, so that the reader understands from the beginning and then is left to their own devices. I have a lot of 'banged out' designs and layouts for this brief, and I am wondering if I should dismiss them all or not. A lot of the images lose impact because they are black and white. And the fact that I'm including imagery of a slaughterhouse suggests that I really need consider colour. I was thinking of printing the book in black and white but having colour inserts that can be bound into the design. I need to speak to the binding service at Leeds University to see what other services they offer as to variations on binding for my design. I need to research more for this and come up with a chapter structure, I know my design direction which makes me feel a lot better. I'm thinking of maybe experimenting with printing my meat pictures onto acetate and have them as inserts into the design. Where this could go abstract can then flood into music lyrics and quotations.

* Splendora
This brief is basically fine, I just need to add more content from Tom and myself and experiment with stocks as originally it was a magazine idea, but now it would be more suited as a zine.

* The Waitress
I need to google different ways menus are presented as I am happy with my simple designs, they just need to be presented in a way in which would relate to the brief and the design.

------

I feel generally less stressed, but I have started lots of smaller projects that need to be categorised and labelled as another brief, something that has been getting really good reactions has been my chloe sevigny zine... perhaps I should extend that? My Peep Show zine has also had a good reaction. Maybe one of my briefs should be miscellaneous zines and have ten different zines? And maybe then I would be less obsessed with trying to make everything into a zine. I was thinking about doing a series of funny celebrity zines?

* Peep Show
